ONEONTA & THE CIVIL WAR EXHIBIT

09/16/2011 - "Oneonta and the Civil War," commemorating the sesquicentennial of the beginning of the Civil War, opens on Saturday Sept. 17 at the Greater Oneonta Historical Society's History Center, 183 Main Street.

Through text, images, and a limited number of artifacts, the exhibit includes the abolitionist movement, the Underground Railroad, and U.S. Colored Troops in Oneonta and Otsego County; Otsego County Medal of Honor winners; Oneonta's military contributions; a visit by Oneonta civilians behind military lines; daily life on the homefront, and other related topics. Special events are scheduled during the exhibit:

On Sunday, Sept. 18, there will be an exhibit reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Kathy Shimberg and friends will play and sing Civil War era music. The event is free and open to the public, and there will be refreshments.

On Monday, October 17 at 7:00 PM, Harry Bradshaw Matthews, associate dean and director of the U.S. Pluralism Center at Hartwick College, will present "Flight to Freedom: Oneonta's Role in the Underground Railroad." Matthews will provide documentary evidence that Oneonta was a site for the Underground Railroad.

On Saturday Nov. 12, at 1 p.m., the singing group Redeeming Love will present a special repertoire of anti-slavery songs from New England in the 1840's and 1850's, including some by the Hutchinson Family Singers. Redeeming Love's Ric Chrislip describes the Hutchison Family Singers as the 'rock stars' of the North before the Civil War.

The exhibit is scheduled to close on Tuesday Nov. 15. The exhibit committee includes Harry Bradshaw Matthews, Bob Brzozowski, Richard Copley, Bob Consigli, Len Pudelka, Mark Simonson, Susan Plantz, and Art Torrey. The History Center is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays from noon to 3 p.m., with hours and days added for special events or by prior appointment.
