First Night Oneonta Features Many Performers

12/16/2011 - First Night Oneonta announces a major Festival of Arts, Dance and Music for New Year's Eve. Downtown Oneonta will be transformed into a bustling, eclectic family festival featuring a lively mix of arts, music and dance. The live music part of the festival features 37 artists performing in 14 venues within five city blocks between 6-10 p.m., for a total of about 100 performances.

"We've tapped some remarkable artists from as far as Virginia but mostly from Oneonta, Ithaca, Binghamton and the Albany area. They'll be featured in all types of venues including the Oneonta Theatre, Foothill Performing Arts Center plus stores and churches up and down Main Street. Everything is within an easy stroll," said David Hayes, First Night Board Chair.

Scheduled in between youth programs presented by the Oneonta World of Learning at 1 p.m. and professional fireworks at 10 p.m., a city-wide festival of music and dance featuring a multitude of artists will feature performing artists including: Murali Coryel, Dana LaCroix, Walt Michael & Co., The Horseshoe Lounge Playboys, Richie Stearns, Driftwood, Shunzo Ohnon Jazz Quartet, The Nellies, The Dady Brothers, Stan Fox's So & So's Rhythm and Blues Review, and last year's smash Salsa Libre.

Additional features include: an enormous Main Street parade at 5 p.m., performances by four area dance schools, historic presentations, a "Words for the New Year" poetry reading at 3 p.m., a wind ensemble, the Hobart Fire Dept Fife & Drum Band, bagpipes, chamber singers, the Cosmic Karma Fire dancers, a harmonica band, a Beatles tribute band, an Indonesian dance troupe, belly dancers, the Blue Ribbon cloggers, Catskill Puppet Theater, jugglers and more. "It's all about entertainment and fun for families," Hayes added.

First Night Oneonta buttons are only $15 and a number of events are free. Last year's festival drew over 1,500. This year's expanded programming is expected to attract even more.
