Youth Ensemble to Perform Winter Concerts

01/27/2012 - The Little Delaware Youth Ensemble, under the musical direction of violinist Julie Signitzer, announces their winter concerts on Jan. 29, at Anderson Theatre, Hartwick College, Oneonta and on Feb. 5, 2012 at Farrell Hall, SUNY Delhi. Both concerts begin at 3 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Children are welcome! A reception will follow the performances.

The string ensemble, composed of 31 young people ages 8 18, will perform pieces by Bartok, Telemann, Vivaldi and Mark O'Connor.

This year's soloists are violinists Nathaniel Olmstead and Julian Matthews performing in Vivaldi's Concerto No. 3 Autumn. Violinists Collin Gill, Jessica Fisher and Nathaniel Olmstead will each solo in Mark O'Connor's Strings and Threads Suite. "Every semester offers new challenges , says music director Julie Signitzer, "as older students move away and younger come into the ensemble. For instance, we have a wonderful new contingent of inexperienced eight and nine year old violinists who are all eager and bright, as well as a strong core of more experienced players. Bringing them together to sound like one orchestra is an enormous undertaking," continued Signitzer. " We learn as we go and have a great time in the process. It is always an endearing experience."

"LDYE is a special opportunity for young string players and a unique component of the local arts community," noted board member Jane Curley. "The accomplishments of this group are a real treasure."

Student members in LDYE include Christina Erickson and Collin Gill of Delhi and Liam Rockwell from Jefferson. Students from Cooperstown include Sam and Lucian Lytel, Trent Cooper, Scott Curtis, Olivia Baker, Lila Oursler, Nathaniel Olmstead and Heidi Edmonds. Philip Wasson is from Fly Creek. Elena Brzozowski, Olivia Hanbridge, Stephanie Talaia and Finn Frye are from Oneonta and Marta Villanueva is from Stamford. Katie Marie Eklund, Mary Martha Kennedy and Owen Kennedy come from Mt. Vision and Jessica Fisher is from Walton. Students from Franklin include Annie LeCompte-Maynard and Julian Matthews. Curtis and Cedric Taylor are from Margaretville while Noah Dougherty and Winnie Richards travel from Bovina. Sabrina Harrison is from Richmondville. Siobahn Higgins and Naamah Romano come from Otego and Katelyn Jackson is from Unadilla.
