Schoharie Area Long Term Recovery Launches Green Ribbon Fundraising Campaign

S.A.L.T. to partner with the Green Shirts Disaster Recovery Organization for Damage Assessment of Affected Communities

02/24/2012 - Elected officials, community leaders and county residents gathered this morning at Lasell Hall in Schoharie to announce the launch of the Schoharie Area Long Term Recovery (S.A.L.T.) organization's Green Ribbon Campaign, which will raise funds to support long term disaster recovery assistance in the communities affected by Tropical Storms Irene and Lee. S.A.L.T. staff discussed their organization's commitment to the region and provided an update on the work that has been accomplished in the months since the storms brought devastating flooding to towns and villages in Schoharie and Greene Counties.

"Despite the amazing progress that has been made, much work remains to be done to bring our communities back," said Rev. Sherri Mayer-Veen, Chair of the S.A.L.T. Board. "The funds and other resources raised through the Green Ribbon Campaign will be used to help rebuild our region."

S.A.L.T. was founded in the immediate aftermath of the storms to provide interfaith and inter-agency resources, advocacy, healing, support, and recovery assistance to those affected by disaster. S.A.L.T's volunteer Board includes representatives from private business, public agencies, the agriculture and farming community, and faith-based organizations; in the near future, three paid staff members will be added to coordinate S.A.L.T.'s disaster recovery efforts. S.A.L.T. was founded with support from the Community Foundation for the Capital Region, the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation, United Way of the Greater Capital Region and KeyBank.

Beginning in March, S.A.L.T. will collaborate with the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee's "Green Shirts" volunteers, who will go door to door through the region to identify those areas in most need of assistance.

"We are grateful for the assistance the Green Shirts will be providing," said SUNY Cobleskill's Brian Kaiser, Chair of S.A.L.T.'s Volunteer Committee. "We urge residents to work with the Green Shirt volunteers, as they will be S.A.L.T.'s eyes and ears in the community."

The information gathered by the Green Shirts will be provided to S.A.L.T., who will ensure that assistance is directed to those areas most in need.

Today also marked the launch of S.A.L.T.'s Green Ribbon Campaign, which will raise funds to support the organization's disaster recovery efforts. Green ribbons will be available for purchase at businesses throughout Schoharie and Greene Counties. Funds raised from the campaign will be used to help residents in the affected region stabilize their lives and rebuild their homes and communities. Those wishing to purchase a "virtual green ribbon" can do so by visiting the S.A.L.T. website at www.saltrecovery.org.
