Parents & Childcare Providers "Give Kids a CHANCE" to Lifelong Benefits

03/16/2012 - Cornell Cooperative Extension Nutrition Educators present Cornell University's new and innovative curriculum "CHANCE" in Davenport, Sidney, and Hancock communities – CHANCE stands for Collaboration for Health Activity & Nutrition in Children's Environments.

Parents and caregivers (relatives, daycare providers, preschool educators) are learning the Paths and Keys to Success to guide their children ages 3-11 years old into habits and behaviors associated with lifelong wellbeing. CHANCE materials and activities interlock strong parenting skills with nutrition information that impact families' success in making healthy changes. In small groups, participants attend eight sessions with hands-on workshops, prepare recipes, taste new foods, and try out activities to do with their children; they focus on ways to positively impact children's health and to change environments inside and outside the home so that everyone can make healthy choices easier.

CHANCE is sponsored by Delaware County's community organizations such as Hancock Children's Center, Sidney Cullman Child Development Center, Parents as Leaders Center and by county agencies such as Delaware Opportunities Head Start and Department of Social Services.

Upcoming CHANCE groups are scheduled in Hancock beginning March 22, at Rausch Memorial Hall at Hancock Children's Center at 10 a.m. and in Sidney beginning March 22, at the Cullman Child Development Center for staff training at 6 p.m. Classes run for eight weeks.
