Deer Tick Increase - People Urged to Check for Ticks
03/30/2012 - Disease carrying ticks are expected to be heavily infesting our outdoors areas this spring due to a warmer winter than normal. A map of highest concentrations is not reason to be lax in awareness. Ticks may come indoors on pets if you own them. Yard chores including clean-ups are perfect ways to encounter them. Take precautionary actions, like light colored clothing, pants tucked into socks and DEET based repellant should be used. Clothing worn outside should be sent through dryer cycle as heat kills ticks. Carefully check body for ticks, especially children's hair.
Any tick attached to skin should be removed carefully, with tweezers if possible, preserving tick for further testing for infestations.
If bitten, the family physician should be notified as soon as possible for early antibiotic intervention, as early treatment for lyme and or associated diseases will give best resolution to cure. Classic symptoms may not be present and a careful patient history by doctor will be neccessary to prevent serious illness that will be very difficult to cure.
