Village of Franklin Hosts Ribbon Cutting on Two Projects Tuesday
06/15/2012 - The Village of Franklin will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. on June 19th to celebrate the groundbreaking of two prominent projects. Over the past year, the Village of Franklin with the support of Delaware County Economic Development and Delaware Engineering has been successful in the submission and award of two grants projects, a combined total of approximately $3.8 million. The awarded funds will allow for the Village of Franklin to address two significant areas of concern for residents and create a more functional and attractive community for all.
With the assistance of a $255,000 New York Main Street Program grant awarded to the Village by the New York State Office of Homes and Community Renewal, several buildings within the Villages primary commercial district will receive some long awaited improvements. The target area for this program is comprised by the buildings between Maple Street and Water Street, along State Highway 357, a roadway which is heavily traveled. The funds will allow building owners within the target area to undertake improvements to these mixed-use building while reducing the financial burden to the owner and encouraging private sector investment, with the end goal of increasing and creating more functional commercial space, and safer apartment rentals.
Additionally, a $2,000,000 grant and $1,478,000 low-interest loan has been awarded to the Village by the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Development. These funds will allow for the replacement of the Village's current 150-year-old water system. This will replace all water lines currently in use by the Village except for the main street section from Otego Street to Institute Street. That section of street was replaced by the State when they put in the storm drains in the mid 70s.
The ceremony will be held in the center of the Village's commercial area and all are encouraged to attend. The Governor of New York State has been invited as have regional and local dignitaries, business owners, school administration, students and residents. Any questions regarding the celebration should be directed to John Campbell, Mayor, Village of Franklin by phoning (607) 746-5890.
